Visual Resources Collection

The art history slide collection houses over 90,000 slides that formed the basis of Department of Art's lectures, as well as student or guest lecturer's reference slides. These slides cover art and architecture of the world ranging from prehistory to contemporary art. The slide collection remains available for access by appointment as a closed collection. Light tables, scanning equipment (in the adjacent Scanning Lab) and wireless access are available. To protect the collection, no food or beverages are permitted in the area.

Although many of the images in the slide collection have be digitized over the years, most of the historical art images currently needed for instruction are accessed through Stony Brook Libraries' ARTstor subscription.  ARTstor images are available for use directly online or offline, and are available to all of the university community's  members.
