Help on using the citation management tool EndNote.

System Requirements & Download

Before you download and install EndNote, please review the system requirements for your computer and operating system. If you are planning to use the Cite While You Write (CWYW) plug in to connect EndNote to Microsoft Word, you should download EndNote to a computer that already has Word loaded.

DOWNLOADING FOR THE FIRST TIME

If you have never installed EndNote, simply download EndNote 21 from SoftWeb and install it on your personal computer. You will need to enter your NetID and password.

UPGRADING FROM ENDNOTE X20

If you have EndNote X20 and want to upgrade to 21, make sure you do the following:

  • make a copy of your current library (click on File - Compressed Library and save the .enlx file to a separate folder)
  • download EndNote 21 from SoftWeb and install it on your personal computer. When you first launch it, you will have an option to open an existing library and can navigate to your saved X20 .enlx file
  • uninstall EndNote X20 (recommended but not required)

Setting up Find Full Text EndNote preferences for SBU Libraries

EndNote can sometimes find the full text of a citation automatically by searching for data online and through the Libraries databases. To optimize this feature, you should take the following steps. 

  • Choose Edit - Preferences.
  • Under Find Full Text, check off the four options and then fill in the OpenURL Path and Authenticate with boxes


  • OpenURL Path:  https://search.library.stonybrook.edu/view/uresolver/01SUNY_STB/openurl

    Authenticate with:   http://proxy.library.stonybrook.edu/login?url=

Note that

The Find Full Text feature will not find everything for you. Some journals and database services (e.g., JSTOR) will not work with it. You can always import PDFs manually.

How do I avoid the product key during installation (Windows only)?

As SBU has a site license for EndNote, you should not be asked for the product key. To avoid this, you will need to do the following:

After downloading EndNote program, be sure to Extract All before installing.
