NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Guidance

This guide provides information and resources for Stony Brook researchers regarding the new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, which takes effect on January 25, 2023.

NIH DMSP Workflow

NIH outlines the following steps in planning and developing a data management and sharing plan:

1) Determine if your research falls under the DMS policy

  • Any study that generates scientific data
  • Includes data needed to replicate and validate findings
  • Does not include laboratory notebooks, preliminary analyses, completed case report forms, drafts of scientific papers, plans for future research, peer reviews, communications with colleagues, or physical objects such as laboratory specimens
  • A justification is required for data that cannot be shared, for example, data that cannot be effectively de-identified, or data that is of a sensitive nature.

2) Identify repositories and methods for data management and sharing scientific data:

3) Develop a plan

4) Estimate and request funds for data management and sharing
