BUS 115: Introduction to Business: HR

This guide is designed to help students in the BUS 115 class at Stony Brook University find information for their assignments.

Hoover's

Check Hoover's to get the number of employees, in the Key Information section, and see if there are subsidiaries whose sites you might also want to check.

LinkedIn

If you have a LinkedIn account, you can search for employees in the company and check their job titles. This also gives you an idea of the company's structure and is helpful when the company isn't currently hiring. There might even be a group(s) for the company's employee that provides useful information.

Company Website

The company's website is a great resource for answering the questions on this assignment. Check the Careers section to see what types of jobs the company is currently looking to fill. Take a look at the requirements for those positions, as they may list who the candidate would report to. The job posting may also contain information on benefits. Also look for links about Benefits, Pay, Leadership, Opportunities. Large companies often offer information on the benefits of working for their companies and promote them on their website. When looking at the job listing, look to see if there is a Category filter that will give you an idea of how the company is organized. This is helpful if you can't locate a copy of their org chart. Don't forget about the support positions that every company has, like secretaries, electricians, custodians, etc.

Job Search Websites

Indeed, Monster, glassdoor, or other job hunting websites are also good places to check. These sites also sometimes provide salary and company comparisons, and interview questions. This information is provided by visitors to the site so it's not "authoritative" but you can certainly look for trends in the responses to get a sense of what it is like to work for the company or have an interview there. Don't give too much weight to responses that are overly negative. Remember people having good experiences may not be as motivated to share their experiences.

If you use information like this in your assignment, be sure to note where it came from and clearly state that you realized the information is anecdotal. This way your instructor can see that you understand the difference between this type of information and the factual information you would get from a site like Hoover's.
