Other SBU Courses and Programs

Most academic departments at Stony Brook offer opportunities to engage in independent research with a faculty mentor through upper division research, independent study, and/or internship courses, typically designated as 487 (independent study, including independent research) and 488 (internship). In addition to these, here are some departments and programs that offer more specific opportunities to support undergraduate researchers:

Explorations in STEM / PSEG Scholars
Summer program that supports 10 weeks of research in a STEM-related field. Applicants should already have an intended mentor and project in mind. Program participants receive a $4500 stipend.
Program in Writing and Rhetoric Courses
PWR offers such courses as Writing for the Health Professions (WRT 305), Advanced Research Writing (WRT 380), Advanced Analytic and Argumentative Writing (WRT 381), and Grant Writing (WRT 382).
Psychology Research Opportunities
Information on becoming a psychology research assistant, taking psychology research courses, and tips on finding a position in a psychology lab.
Research in the Biosciences
Research courses include Biology and Society (BIO 484), Neurobiology and Behavior (BIO 486), Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (BIO 487), and Ecology and Evolution (BIO 489). All undergraduate researchers will also need to complete the CITI training module.
