Types of Alerts

In general, there are three types of alerts:

Search Alerts - You do a search on your subject (eg. William Shakespeare and television adaptations) and receive alerts when new articles have been published on the topic.

Journal Alerts - Receive an alert when the new issue of a journal has been published. Some journals send the Table of Contents (TOC) and some send the TOC and Abstracts.

Citation Alerts - If you are interested in knowing when someone cites a specific article, you can set up a Citation Alert. These are not available from all databases and publishers.

Receiving Alerts

There are generally two methods for receiving ALERTS:

1) EMAIL - Alerts will be sent to an email account. If you are going to set up a lot of alerts, consider creating a separate email account for this purpose using a free service such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, etc.

2) RSS FEEDS - You will need a RSS FEED READER of some kind for this method. See the article below.

Create a personal account and then receive either search alerts or journal alerts in your email for the nursing and allied health literature.
HighWire Press
This online publisher of 1,432 journal titles offers both electronic table of contents and alerts when new content in participating journals is published.
IngentaConnect
This service has 30,000 popular and scholarly journal titles with both new issue alerts and search alerts for new articles added to the database.
Nature Publishing
Set up alert by table of contents or by subject across all Nature Publishing journals.
New England Journal of Medicine
When you create an account you can sign up for specialty-specific email alerts, save articles and searches, and much more.
Project Muse
Receive weekly email notifications of new journal issues or new titles available in Project MUSE.
PubMed
My NCBI features saved searches to generate updates and filters to group your retrieval by topics of interest to you.
Science
Registered users can select from either Content Awareness alerts or CiteTrack Personal Research alerts with a username and password.
Science.gov
Profile results from over 45 databases are displayed in a weekly email alert, as well as in an archive which stores six weeks of alerts results.
ScienceDirect
Alerts notify you by email either daily or weekly when new journal issues or articles of interest have been added from a collection of over 2,500 journal titles.
STAT!Ref Evidence Alerts
Accesses a range of healthcare disciplines to deliver pre-rated EBM alerts that are qualified and rated for clinical relevance and newsworthiness.
Web of Science
Create alerts on topics relevant to your research interests or receive alerts each time articles are cited using the My Cited Articles List feature.
