Greetings,
In February 2023, Stony Brook University Libraries embarked on its next Strategic Plan. The primary purpose of the strategic plan is to guide the future direction of the libraries and ensure that we are efficiently and effectively meeting the needs of our users within our means. In addition, we strive to grow our innovation and technology while incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in every aspect of our work. Through this process, we will identify new opportunities for growth and innovation while prioritizing our resources and initiatives. Our plan will cover the next five years, starting in late 2023 and ending in late 2028.
The Libraries’ strategic plan will be aligned with the University-wide strategy and the strategic plan from the Health Sciences/Stony Brook Medicine division. While these plans are still being worked on, the libraries were given the green light to start our strategic planning process with the ability to make adjustments as needed.
Reaching the center of the planning phase, the libraries’ strategic planning committee is nearing completion of an abbreviated self-study. We held three early focus groups to gather insight from our community and colleagues—one for students, one for campus staff and faculty, and one for library staff and faculty. Summer 2023 will be focused on our goals and values and working with our library colleagues. In the Fall semester, the planning committee will continue gathering information and solicit input from the SBU community by holding forums. We will also continue to analyze current trends in academic libraries and higher education.
