Creating a New Mix: Virtual Poster Session

Designing & Delivering Targeted Library Instruction Using a Variety of Approaches

Advanced Searching for Systematic Reviews*

Welcome to this research guide on Advanced Searching for Systematic Reviews, created for PSY 507.  In this guide you'll find 5 tutorials.  After watching each tutorial, there is an activity to complete and a questionnaire to assess if further assistance is needed.

We will be attending a session of the course in person and are available via email and zoom consult as well.  Our contact info is on this page.

*This was the original opening text for the LibGuide used with PSY 507 in fall 2021.

Response from the Students

The questionnaires, simple Google forms, provided feedback on what students still needed help with. These issues were addressed in the synchronous session.

Pie chart showing the distribution of answers to how well students understood controlled vocabulary. 76.9% had a good understanding and 23.1% understood but wanted help finding terms for their topics.

Response from the Instructor

The response from the instructor, who teaches this course regularly, was positive. They appreciated the mix of modalities used to cover the content:

"This is by far the best version of this seminar that the library has produced for me. It was perfectly pitched and very helpful."

Instructor email, fall 2020

In the fall of 2021, the instructor began re-using the recorded tutorials with a new class but did not contact librarians for a synchronous session. The LibGuide was still active but certain parts of the lessons had to be updated quickly:

"I have been directing students to the fantastic tutorials that you put together for my Meta-Analysis class last year.  I know that Zoom took everything down so the links are no longer active.  Do you happen to have downloaded recordings of them?"

Instructor email, fall 2021

Usage Data

Some basic usage data was available through Springshare's analytics showing that views to the LibGuide were higher in the semester that included a synchronous component. Further research would be needed to determine more precisely the effects of using the different modalities.

Bar graph showing the number of views to the LibGuide: 360 for fall 2020, 68 for fall 2021.
