In 2002 I became an adjunct professor of Anthropology at Western Oregon University
and took over teaching their museum studies courses. Each year, I found that several of
my students were interested in pursuing museum work as a career and wanted
information on what options were available and what programs were out there. Towards
this end, I began researching museum studies programs across the US and Canada to
compile information for my students, and others, who may wish to move on to pursue
museum studies further. What I found was that several printed guides, such as
by V. Danilov (1994), AAM Technical
Information Service’s
(by
Roxana Adams and Thomas J. Ritzenthaler, 1999), and the
Gary Edson, editor (1995), are now out of date, and that the on3line
listings of museum studies offerings, while numerous, are incomplete. What is needed
is a directory that can be updated on a regular basis...an online resource. This directory
has been produced to help fill that need.
This resource has been created as a guide for people seeking information on museum3
training offerings in the US and Canada, whether they are seeking to enter the field or
have been a practicing professional for some time and are looking for academic
programs which will help them to advance. The information contained is a directory and
compilation of basic information on the variety of museum3training offerings available in
the US and Canada. The training options have been divided into:
Graduate Museum Studies Programs: Degree programs in Museum
Studies/Museology/Museum Professions/Museum & Field Studies, Museum
Anthropology, Museum Communication, Museum Education, Museum
Exhibition/Design, Collections Management, and Curatorial Studies/Practice.
Museum Studies Certificate Programs: Graduate, Graduate3Level, Professional
and Non3Degree Certificates.
Discipline3Based Graduate Programs: Degree programs that offer a Museum
Studies Emphasis, Concentration, Option, Certificate, and/or Minor.
Undergraduate Programs: Programs offering a Major, Minor, Certificate,
Advanced Diploma, and/or Specialization in Museum Studies.
Programs, graduate or undergraduate, which only offer a few courses in Museum
Studies, were not included. Likewise, related programs, such as Public History, Historic
Preservation, Cultural Management, Nonprofit Management, Heritage Studies, Heritage
Management, Conservation, Arts Administration, Arts Management and Arts Education
were not included.
The categories created 3and information requested from the various museum studies
programs3 for this resource were based on information my students have asked about
such programs. Occasionally, some information in this guide has been listed as “N/A”
due to either the category being “not applicable,” or to the information being “not
available.”
Please be aware that while this guide will be updated regularly, museum studies
programs change, particularly the contact information and degree requirements. Also,
new programs are being developed and current programs are being updated and
revamped. If you do find a program you are interested in pursuing, please check their
website and contact the department for the most up3to3date information, costs and
requirements.

The Department of Museum Studies at Baylor University prepares
students for successful museum careers, emphasizing administration, curatorship,
collections management, exhibits, and education, through guided instruction, research,

degrees (BA and BS) in Museum Studies, as well as a Master’s degree, in the United
States. The unique resources of the Mayborn Museum Complex and a low
student/faculty ratio ensure that students in the department are thoroughly trained.

fingertips. They may work in or have classes in the Fenimore Art Museum, The
Farmers' Museum, The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
The building will be completely renovated in
2009. In the long term, plans are to expand offerings in leadership and management.
The museum field will face the retirement of the baby boom directors shortly and they
feel that CGP will be one of the places able to contribute new leaders to the field.

Museum Studies Program
M.A. in Museum Studies
!
Established in 1976, the Museum Studies Program at the George
Washington University combines traditional academic training in both academic
subjects and museum practices and the practical experience that is necessary to begin
a successful museum career. We are known for our academic excellence, the strength
of our faculty and incredible local internship opportunities. Today, it is the largest
Museum Studies Program and one of the first of its kind in the United States. Our
faculty is drawn from a pool of practicing museum professionals from the Washington
D.C area with many years of experience in all aspects of museum operations. They
teach what they practice, often on location in the museums where they are employed.
Our flexible program is tailored to each student’s interests and needs, allowing them to
specialize in one of three Museum Studies areas: collections management, exhibition
development/design or management/administration. Students are also required to focus
on an academic core, such as Anthropology, American Studies or History. These
courses provide each student with a solid foundation in an academic subject.

One of the oldest museum studies programs in the U.S., JFKU's graduate
program blends contemporary theory with hands3on practice. This is an exciting time to
pursue a graduate degree in museum studies. Museums, as public educational
institutions, are increasingly more complex 33 and more dynamic. To succeed, they need
professionals with the skills to make them more responsive to the changing conditions
of our diverse society. John F. Kennedy University's Department of Museum Studies is
distinguished by its professionalism, collaborative style, and commitment to social
responsibility. The faculty is comprised of San Francisco Bay Area professionals who
are prominent and active in the field, in addition to being excellent instructors. Working
together in seminar3size classes, students explore histories and theories of museums of
all disciplines and types. They learn about specific tools for solving administrative and
fiscal challenges, and develop and refine professional writing and presentation skills.
Our students gain practical on3site experience through field trips and internships in the
Bay Area and around the world. They create new models for spirited engagement with
diverse audiences, collections and technologies. We seek highly motivated students
from a wide variety of backgrounds who believe museums can make a difference in
people's lives. Classes are offered in the evenings and on weekends to enable students
to continue working during graduate school. JFKU's one3year Certificate in Museum
Studies is tailored for experienced museum professionals and individuals with one or
more graduate degrees who prefer a shorter course of study. Students may specialize
in either collections management or education and interpretation.

For almost thirty years, the Program in Museum Studies at New York
University has offered an innovative course of study in the contemporary theory and
practice of museum work. Emphasizing both the interdisciplinary study of museums and
courses of practical training, the program has prepared more than three hundred
graduates for positions of increasing responsibility in museums throughout the world. In
addition to obtaining a broad foundation in the history and theory of museums, the
creation and maintenance of exhibitions and collections, and museum management, our
students pursue personal programs of study supporting individual academic and career
objectives. Museum Studies at NYU actively crosses disciplinary boundaries in two
ways, assembling scholars from many academic fields whose work engages museum
theory and practice, and training students to perform a variety of roles within all types of
museums. Located in New York City, the cultural capital of the world, and within a great
university known for its interdisciplinary orientation, NYU Museum Studies offers an
unparalleled opportunity to prepare for the challenges of museum work in this new

building our tenure track faculty and revising the curriculum to reflect current museum

covering collections stewardship, exhibition, internal operations and external functions.
Our short3term goals are to introduce new courses related to external operations and to

Annual seminars in Paris, Rome, Berlin or Amsterdam further enrich the curriculum. The
M.A. in Museum Professions program is rooted in an understanding of museum history
and theory, but its primary purpose is to prepare students for a professional career in
museums. Its structure permits students to choose tracks of concentration to fit their
interests, be they in museum education or collections management, exhibitions or

M.A. in Museum Studies
!
The M.A. program in museum studies offers a curriculum based on
research, scholarship, design and hands3on training that prepares you for a wide range
of positions in different types of museums. We want our alumni to be resilient, adaptable
and competent working professionals. The SU Art Galleries provide the main setting for
real3world experience. Students learn that museum operations are indeed a team effort,
requiring you to roll up your sleeves and be actively involved in a variety of tasks and
responsibilities. Experience is also gained through required internships; our students
have worked at such institutions as the Cooper3Hewitt Museum, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Faculty work with you in all aspects of the exhibition process, organize field trips to
museums and conferences, and bring professionals to campus to talk with students.
Because you are part of the University, you also have the opportunity to study in other
fields, including anthropology, art history, or public relations.

Established in 1969, the Museum Studies program seeks to provide
students with a strong theoretical background and professional understanding of
museum origins, ideologies, changing philosophies and current practices. Museology
examines the role and function of museums, the history of museums and museum work

The M.A. in Museum Anthropology, offered by the Department of
Anthropology at Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History
(AMNH), is a professional degree for those currently working in or interested in moving
into the museum field. This program combines the strengths of a premier academic
department of anthropology and an innovative department of museum anthropology
whose collections and archives span the history and geographic range of the discipline.
Students learn the practical skills entailed in working in museums and develop the
strong theoretical perspective essential to those who are using material culture to
express ideas through visual display. The program prepares students to interpret
ethnographic and archaeological collections to the general public, work in registration or
collections management, and become scientific, educational or research staff for a
range of museums, from small local museums with historical or scientific orientations
that require generalists, to larger institutions where staff hold more specialized
museums.

M.S. in Leadership in Museum Education
!
This program was designed to accommodate working professionals, many
of whom live at a considerable distance from New York City. It prepares educators for
leadership positions in museums or cultural institutions. Small classes meet one
weekend a month during the academic year for two years, with an annual five3day June
Institute. The classes are taught by outstanding practitioners and Bank Street Graduate
School faculty. Year One provides the foundation for effective program and audience
development with classes on human development, learning theory, exhibit
development, and program design and evaluation. Year Two focuses on organizational
management including leadership styles, understanding the role of the mission,
strategic planning and board responsibilities, marketing, financial management and staff
development. Students meet monthly with their individual advisors and also with their
small conference group. Each advisor, who is an experienced educator and manager,
visits his or her advisees in their work settings. Course work includes visits to cultural
institutions and interviews with people who set the standards for the field.

Bank Street College’s graduate programs in Museum Education prepares
students to be a museum educator knowledgeable about children and schools, and
prepared to work with diverse museum visitors of all ages. Two of the programs also
prepare students to teach in the classroom as well as in a museum setting. Through the
program you will gain a strong foundation in human development, learning theories,
school curriculum, and museum policy and practice, with field experiences in museums
and schools. The museum component of the program helps you bring the full richness
of museum collections, programs, and resources to children in their schools, with their
families and within their communities. The museum courses complement the education
courses in your program, emphasizing the educational role and mission of museums
and schools in a pluralistic society. As part of your graduate program, you will visit
museums, meet with museum staff, observe museum3school partnerships in action, and
develop museum3based projects. You will also learn about child development and its
variations, curriculum development, reading, mathematics, science and the arts. These
courses stress a learner3centered, integrated, experiential approach to learning for
children of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and ages (elementary through middle school).

Museums and galleries worldwide are becoming more dependent upon
their audiences for support. Consequently, the role of museums is changing to meet
audience demands, including expectations for more relevant and accessible public
educational programming to promote cultural knowledge and interests. This growing
trend has created a greater demand for well3trained professionals with special
knowledge and expertise in planning and implementing museum programs. Additionally,
current educational theory and methodology embrace the inclusion of art history,
criticism, and aesthetics as critical components of the arts education curriculum, all
areas heavily dependent upon museums for exemplary resources and reference. The
Masters of Arts in Museum Education focuses on a wide variety of museums and
institutions with similar missions and operations and prepares educators to function
within the changing context of contemporary schools, museums and related institutions.
This degree is an appropriate option for those with a strong commitment to providing
educational programming within a museum context or alternative site, as well as for
teachers who wish a concentration in museum education so they may utilize museum
resources more effectively in the classroom.

Exhibition and Museum Studies
M.A. in Museum Exhibition and Museum Studies
!
The study of museums and exhibitions and their continuing expansion
provides a unique avenue towards understanding the intersection of preservationism
and constant display in contemporary culture. The recent expansion of museums,
exhibitions, and their cultural tourism corollary is the result of a profound transformation
of institutions of modernity in the wake of globalization and technological developments
enabling the rapid distribution, circulation, and delivery of cultural experience. Museums
and exhibitions have assumed an omnipresent status in contemporary culture, visible
through the museum and exhibition cultural experience circuit. The Master of Arts in
Exhibition and Museum Studies at SFAI is founded on the understanding that museums
and exhibitions are both historical objects and subjects. SFAI's program affords
students a grounded understanding of the history and roles of institutions of modernity
(museums, historical societies, archives, libraries, architectural commissions) in
contemporary culture, the economy of the artworld, and the politics which affect it. The
Exhibition and Museum Studies program is therefore grounded in research and critical
analysis through seminars, colloquia, symposia, and independent study in
organizations, agencies, museums, galleries, departments of culture, libraries, archives,
and private collections. The program of study addresses broad areas of interest such as
curatorial models, exhibition systems and concepts, institutional mediation, and
education. It pays special attention to areas such as historical preservation, heritage
management, the ethics of trade in antiquities, and the problematic of cross3cultural and
cross3disciplinary curating often found in works understood as primarily ethnographic,
anthropologic, and archaeological. Students will examine the role of the museum in the
public sphere, its relationship to civil society, and the frustration of its civic identity as a
public trust by private enterprise.

Curatorial Practice Program
M.A. in Curatorial Practice
!
As contemporary art practice evolves, the role of the curator has changed
dramatically. Ideas on the relationship between art, exhibition space, and audience are
changing, and the way that art institutions are structured and administered is becoming
more complex. The first of its kind on the West Coast, the program seeks to extend the
current European and North American academic focus on traditional museum and
gallery exhibitions to think about the impact of artist3led initiatives and explore the
developments of curating beyond the gallery. Reflecting San Francisco's geographic
location and cultural histories, the program also places specific emphasis on exploring
curatorial and art practices in Asia and Latin America, to understand the recent
developments in these regions. Providing an international perspective, and with
professional development at its core, the program encourages independent thinking and
group collaboration, preparing students for careers in museums and galleries, public art
commissioning, project management, and publishing.

As museums and interpretive centers proliferate at unprecedented rates,
the need for informed and educated professionals in the field has increased. The field of
museum exhibitions is multidisciplinary and strategic in nature, and covers a wide range
of areas including planning, methods of communication, and storytelling in three and
four dimensions. The field also encompasses more tactical areas such as graphic
design, environmental design, multi3media design and production, fabrication,
administration and project management. This certificate program focuses on methods of
presentation for museum collections, while exploring the full range of issues related to
exhibition communication and methodology. Students engage in projects that involve
museum galleries, interpretive centers, and commercial exhibits to gain a deeper
understanding of the process of planning and designing effective interpretive exhibits
geared toward the public within this unique cultural environment. The purpose of the
certificate program is to provide professional exhibition planning and design training
skills to students interested in pursuing work in the museum field or other cultural fields.

Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies with concentrations in Art History,

!
When today's museum professionals talk, you hear about the energy of
their institution, the involvement of the community, and the "hows" and "whys" of making
exhibitions and programs interactive. Today's museum professionals are problem3
solvers, educators, administrators, and logistical experts. They are people who
understand not only the information that their collections hold, but how to tell their
stories. At Tufts, students study with professionals who understand all of this and more.
The program draws on the expertise of professionals from a variety of institutions, and
from a rich array of university resources. These connections create a dynamic setting
for people new to the field, as well as people already in museums, to further explore the
changing world of museums. Certificate students choose a concentration in either Art
History, Classics, Education, or History. The concentration you select, along with your
background and career goals, guides you toward the courses you will take. The

Much of the planning depends on hiring a
new director, for which they are searching this year (07308) to start next academic year

Program rise to national prominence. There is thought that it will be possible to achieve
this goal in the next 5310 years. There are also some who would like to see the Program
operate at an international level, perhaps by offering courses on comparative museum
administration, collections policies, etc., and also by raising money to send students

Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies
!
The Department of American Studies at the University of Hawai'i at
Mānoa (UHM) offers a graduate certificate program in museum studies. Students in the
program learn about the roles and responsibilities of museum professionals –such as
caring for and displaying collections, providing educational outreach and public
services, and increasing the participation of native/indigenous peoples in the respectful
presentation and use of native cultural resources. In addition, students learn about the
efforts of museums to increase revenues by turning to cultural tourism and heritage
activities, and to attract and engage non3traditional visitors through innovative
approaches. The program is the result of a working partnership between the university,
local museums, and the Hawai‘i Museums Association. Through classes, field site visits,
guest speakers, summer institutes and internships, the program offers a broad
spectrum of practical and scholarly experiences. In addition to learning about the roles
and responsibilities of museum professionals, students become familiar with the
challenges facing contemporary museums. The certificate can be taken by graduate
students concurrently enrolled in other degree programs, people wishing to do the
certificate only, or museum professionals interested in updating skills.

Non3Degree Certificate in Museum Studies or Historic Preservation
!
Museum Studies and Historic Preservation are intertwined in their focus
on the interpretation and preservation of our cultural heritage. These inter3related and
multidisciplinary fields make meaningful contributions to contemporary communities by
helping them protect and understand tangible evidence of the past. Historians and
designers offer different but complementary approaches to the fields of Historic
Preservation and Museum Studies: From the historian's perspective, a career in
preservation or museum settings offers exciting opportunities for researching,
preserving, and interpreting the past to reach a broad public audience beyond the
traditional classroom. Approaching preservation from the designer's perspective offers a
range of opportunities to identify, document, evaluate, restore, rehabilitate, and adapt
the historic built environment. The post3baccalaureate certificates in Museum Studies
and Historic Preservation at UNCG embody the interdisciplinary nature of these fields
by drawing on the resources of two strong departments: History and Interior
Architecture. Together, these two departments are the first in the state of North Carolina
to offer graduate concentrations in Historic Preservation and Museum Studies.

Museum Management Program
Certificate of Graduate Study in Museum Management
!
The museum field in the United States has grown significantly in the four
decades since the end of World War II. Between 30% and 40% of paid museum
employees are involved in work unique to museums. The American Association of
Museums has stressed the benefit of specialized museum training as well as a firm
grounding in one or more academic subject areas to prepare potential museum
employees for their jobs. The University of South Carolina now offers a graduate level
program leading to the Certificate of Graduate Study in Museum Management. This
program, taught through the University’s McKissick Museum, adheres to the
professional standards established by the American Association of Museums while also
providing a source of knowledgeable, trained personnel for the many rapidly growing
regional institutions. The Certificate Program is designed to be followed by graduate
degree3seeking students in many departments in the humanities and social sciences, as
well as in the College of Library and Information Science. This course of study will
prepare students in academic areas for entry3level museum positions, provide museum
workers with skills for advancement in their careers, and serve as a source of
information on new museological theory and practices for higher level professionals who
have been in the museum profession for some years. Course work is focused on a
number of aspects of museum work including management of museums and museum
collections, implementation and evaluation of museum programs, presentation of
collections, and ethical and legal aspects of museum operations. Internships are
arranged with selected museums throughout the region. This experience allows
students to assume professional level responsibilities, receive training and guidance
from museum professionals, and understand the overall operation of the museum and
its relationship to the museum field.

Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies

The Museum Studies Program was established in 1963 as a cooperative
venture between UW3Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Public Museum. The goal of the
program is to provide, in a museum environment, the basic scholarship and functional
training to equip the student with the skills necessary to assume professional entry3level
museum positions. Courses are structured to develop a high degree of professionalism
and responsibility, skills in problem solving, critical thinking and evaluation, writing, oral
presentation, decision3making, and teamwork. The program is designed to supplement
a student's graduate degree requirements and it is anticipated that each student will
have a firm footing in his/her academic field to support the course of museum study.
The program stresses professional museum standards and ethics and proper care and
interpretation of collections while providing the opportunity for the development of
expertise and special skills. The program is designed to be practical and realistic.
Regular individual academic advising and career planning are important features of the
program. The majority of graduates of the program find a paid position in a museum
within one year of graduation. Graduates of the program have assumed responsibilities
in museums and related institutions across the country as directors, curators, collections

Museum Studies, based in the anthropology program, explores the ever3

debate the public role of museums, address questions of ownership and repatriation of
collections, and explore the complex relationship between museums and the individuals
and communities that originally created the objects. Most courses are held in the
Museum, allowing students direct experience of the issues and techniques they discuss

M.A. in Anthropology, Concentration in Museum Studies
!
The Museum Studies concentration in anthropology provides students
with a solid background in the theoretical and practical sides of museum studies.
Theoretical course work is complemented by hands3on training in the Museum of
Anthropology (a "teaching museum"), and through supervised internships. The program
emphasizes critical approaches to the study and representation of material culture, art
and cultural expressions; the history and philosophy of museums and their role in
society; cross3cultural approaches to museology, and public interest anthropology.
Students are expected to achieve graduate level competence in anthropology as well as
museum studies. Our goal is to train students to be practicing anthropologists in
museums or related institutions and organizations. The Museum Studies program is
designed to accommodate the diverse academic and professional interests of students.
Students are encouraged to be creative in structuring their own course of study, drawing
on the many resources available at the University of Denver and in Denver3area
museums. The program works closely with the Museum Studies Program in Art History,
offering joint courses in conservation, information technology, and museum
management. Both programs benefit from institutional ties between DU and the Denver
Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature and Science, providing students with
research, internship and job opportunities.

Art history considers the visual arts not as peripheral ornaments to the
social, political, or intellectual history of the world but rather as central manifestations of
society and the human spirit. Ancient, Early Christian and Byzantine, medieval,
Renaissance, Baroque, 19th3century, American, 20th3century art and architecture,
Oriental, Islamic, and Museum Studies are emphasized in the program. The art history
major, often followed by graduate studies, prepares students who seek a career in
teaching, museum work, art galleries, architecture, and art conservation/restoration. The
discipline is also a useful undergraduate major or minor for students pursuing studies in
the humanities, history, music history, law, and business and medicine, as well as other

Museums Studies Program, Department of Art
M.A. in Art, Specializations in Museum Studies or Urban Museum Studies
!
The City College offers three paths for graduate students to pursue a
master’s degree in Art. Each program is designed to prepare students for continued
work toward the Ph.D. or to enter one of many art3related occupations.
Museum Studies Specialization: The Museum Studies specialization offers a flexible
curriculum, allowing students to develop their own area of intended concentration.
Although the program has been primarily focused on art museums, a partnership with
the Lower East Side Tenement Museum has prompted a greater consideration of issues
and practices to other cultural institutions in the required seminars, providing all
students with a broader view of the field. By taking advantage of the cultural institutions
of New York City and the faculty of City College and the CUNY system, students have
the opportunity to explore any number of career choices.
Urban Museum Studies Specialization: This program offers specialized courses for
students interested in urban museum careers. Students who follow this option are
encouraged to take some of their elective courses in American Studies, anthropology,
English, and history, as well as art history and museum studies. Current students and
recent alumnae now hold permanent positions at the Guggenheim, the Lower East Side
Tenement Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New
York, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Hall of Science, the Whitney Museum
of American Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

Georgetown University offers an M.A. degree program in Art & Museum
Studies. This small, selective program of Georgetown's Art, Music & Theater
Department combines academic study of art history and museum practice, and
emphasizes the international contexts of museums in the modern world. Students work
closely with Georgetown art history faculty, curators, and other museum professionals in
Washington DC, and with faculty specialists at Sotheby's Institute of Art in London,
England. The twelve3month course of study combines courses in museology and art
history with internship opportunities at some of Washington’s premier art institutions.
Most courses emphasize both theory and practice, including such topics as the roles of
museums in modern cultures, museum education, collection management, museum
architecture, curatorial work and the ethics of acquisition and display. Students may
expect to take part in critical debates about art exhibition and interpretation.

When today's museum professionals talk, you hear about the energy of
their institution, the involvement of the community, and the "hows" and "whys" of making
exhibitions and programs interactive—talk you didn't hear thirty five years ago. Just as
museum vocabulary changes over time, so do the skills professionals need. Today's
museum professionals are problem3solvers, educators, administrators, and logistical
experts. They are people who understand not only the information that their collections
hold, but how to tell their stories. And it is their passion that creates a living, vibrant
institution. At Tufts, you study with museum professionals who understand all of this and
more. The MA with Certificate program is designed to give students advance
qualification in art history and a broad introduction to museum work. The joint program
is offered for those hoping to work in a small or medium sized museum or arts
organization. Students take courses in art history and museum studies simultaneously

When today's museum professionals talk, you hear about the energy of
their institution, the involvement of the community, and the "hows" and "whys" of making
exhibitions and programs interactive. Today's museum professionals are problem3
solvers, educators, administrators, and logistical experts, who understand not only the
information that their collections hold, but how to tell their stories. The Tufts program
draws not only on the expertise of professionals from a wide variety of area institutions,
but also from a rich array of university resources. The Tufts Museum Studies Program
provides qualified, post3baccalaureate students with professional training in the
administration, preservation and interpretation skills required for a career in the museum

M.A. in History, Concentration in Museum Studies or Historic Preservation;
M.S. in Interior Architecture, Concentration in Museum Studies or Historic Preservation
!
Museum Studies and Historic Preservation are intertwined in their focus
on the interpretation and preservation of cultural heritage 3from the small scale hand3
held artifact to the large scale historic neighborhood. Historians and designers offer
different but complementary approaches to the fields of Historic Preservation and
Museum Studies: From the historian's perspective, a career in preservation or museum
settings offers opportunities for researching, preserving and interpreting the past to a
public audience. Preservation from the designer's perspective offers a range of
opportunities to identify, document, evaluate, rehabilitate and adapt the historic built
environment. The graduate concentrations in Museum Studies and Historic
Preservation at UNCG draw on the resources of two strong departments: History and
Interior Architecture. The collaboration between these departments offers unique
opportunities, combining the art of historical research methods and interpretation with
the theory and skills of design practice.

The Winterthur Program, established in 1952 by the Henry Francis du
Pont Winterthur Museum and the University of Delaware, provides a multidisciplinary
approach to the study of American material life with special emphasis on decorative arts
and household furnishings. The curriculum involves coursework at both the University of
Delaware and the Winterthur Museum & Country Estate. The two3year course of study
leads to a Master of Arts degree in American Material Culture from the University of
Delaware. The Program's two3year curriculum combines the intensive study of objects
with a multidisciplinary perspective. The key elements of the curriculum are
connoisseurship courses, a master's thesis, core requirements, distribution
requirements, field study, and a choice of electives. The Executive Committee of the
Winterthur Program in Early American Culture, comprised of faculty and staff from the
Museum and the University, regularly evaluates the curriculum to help students attain
their intellectual and professional goals.

Graduate Certificate in Museum Practices
!
The Program's objective is to arm students pursuing a broad range of
museum and collections3oriented careers with sufficient practical knowledge to hit the
floor running when they enter post3graduate employment venues. The curriculum
focuses on care, management, and interpretation of collections. These collections
disciplines constitute the core function of museums and demand a substantial body of
underlying theory, such as management systems, stewardship, and exhibition and
education principles that guide public service, as well as the policies, ethics, and laws
that inform museum standards and the legal documentation of collections. The Program
targets students who wish to pursue a museum career as a generalist in small3 to
medium3sized museums in which they would wear many hats and those who wish to be
effective as employees in larger museums whose program planning is guided by the
increasingly popular team approach, knowledge of collaboration across museum
disciplines (registration, curation, education, exhibitions, etc.), and a solid understanding
of collections practices which underlie and drive all museum functions. This program

The Museum Studies Program
Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies –open only to students in graduate
programs at the university.
!
Today's museums are dynamic institutions playing increasingly important
roles in the communities they serve. In addition to being a place for collecting,
preserving, studying and exhibiting "objects," the museum has become a vital arena for
learning, exploring and negotiating the relationships that individuals and groups have
with the social and natural environments. In response, the museum profession has seen
significant growth that has led to greater demand for qualified museum specialists. The
University of Michigan, drawing upon exceptional intellectual and material resources in
the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences and technology, has developed a unique
interdisciplinary graduate program in museum studies. The program trains students in
the theoretical and practical implications of working with and from "objects" and in the
places in which those objects reside. After engaging in a critical examination of the
ideas and practices that have shaped museums and related institutions, students have
opportunities to apply this critical perspective and gain first3hand experience working in
specific institutional settings.

"The IAIA is a multi3tribal center of higher education dedicated to the
preservation, study, creative application, and contemporary expression of American
Indian and Alaska Native arts and cultures." The museum profession is currently one of
the best job markets in the United States. We have over 500 tribal Nations who need
leadership in this field back home. We are in the early stages of Repatriation programs
that will affect every tribe in America with the possibility of reclaiming Tribal cultural
material. The National Museum of the American Indian alone will need over 100
museum professionals in the next few years. The Institute of American Indian Arts is
home to the only four3year Bachelor of Arts museum studies degree program in the
world designed from the Indigenous perspective. Exploring the idea of a “cultural center"
from this point of view leads to creating new ways of looking at and caring for art and
artifacts. As Indians in the field of museology, we keep an important balance: That
between knowledge from our inherent cultural perspective balanced with the more
mainstream predominant methods of collections care. Admissions note: All Bachelors
degrees are four3year degree programs requiring admission into the Bachelors program
after completion of an Associate degree. The AA degree may be earned at IAIA.
