Myths
- AI tools like ChatGPT are search engines.
FACT: AI tools by themselves don't operate like search engines; they are large language models. While some may have access to the Internet, they still do not replace traditional search engines, as their underlying mechanisms are fundamentally different and can result in less accurate or even misleading responses.
- Generative AI always provides accurate information.
FACT: It has been widely documented that generative AI tools are prone to hallucination.
- AI chatbots can reason.
FACT: Current generation of AI can't think the way humans do. Generative AI uses probabilities to generate its outputs.
- AI-generated content is easy to detect.
FACT: Some AI-generated content is very difficult to detect, even with most accurate detection tools or with watermarking techniques during its creation. Multiple studies have shown that AI detection tools, especially those claiming 99% accuracy, do not consistently perform at that level. Some have even been shown to operate at chance-level reliability, making them no better than a coin flip. While a few tools may exceed 90% accuracy under certain conditions, their performance often varies across different styles of work based on their training data and black-box algorithms, making them susceptible to bias against certain groups of authors.
