Patent & Trademark Resources on the Web: Searching US Patent Databases

This guide directs you to free databases and other materials that explain and help with the patent and trademark search process

Conducting a Preliminary Patent Search

Before embarking on a patent search, it is recommended that you watch this online tutorial on conducting a preliminary patent search.  This tutorial was created by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO, an agency of the Department of Commerce.

Nearest Patent & Trademark Resource Center

Long Island's only Patent & Trademark Resource Center  (PTRC) was moved from the Stony Brook University Libraries to the Smithtown Public Library in the Fall of 2012.  Community patrons are encouraged to seek assistance at the Smithtown Public Library PTRC.

For assistance at the SBU Libraries, please contact the Head of Science & Engineering, Robert Tolliver (phone 632-1122), or get help at the Reference Desk, 632-7110.
