Bioinformatics, Genetics and Computational Biology

Databases and resources focused on molecular biology, genetics, genomes, and related biological data.

Library Training Available

The Libraries offer consultations, small-group workshops, and course-integrated instruction in a variety of bioinformatics topics. Customized workshops for you or your group can be scheduled upon your request. Some workshops will be offered through the libraries at various times in each semester: see Library Events. Contact jessica.koos@stonybrook.edu to discuss your needs.

Available topics can include:

  • Basic Intro to Bioinformatics Resources
  • Beyond PubMed: Introduction to NCBI Resources
  • The "Fabulous Four" - Gene, Nucleotide, BLAST, & Structure
  • Genetic variation resources
  • Genome Browsers
  • Clinical Genetics Resources

What is Bioinformatics?

The discipline of bioinformatics combines the biological sciences, computer science, and information technology. The NIH BISTIC Definition Committee defined it in 2000 as:

Research, development, or application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioral or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data.

MetaDatabases

These sites provide a multitude of links to a wide variety of bioinformatics databases, resources, and software.

InfoBoosters

An "InfoBooster" allows you to do quick searches on words in a webpage or pdf file in selected databases. Click & drag the InfoBooster  into the personal toolbar of your web browser. Next, highlight text in a webpage & click on the link in your toolbar. It will instantly autosearch for you. Below is an "InfoBooster" that includes links to search several molecular biology databases.
