COLLECTIONS: Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery

Logging into ILLiad

ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan Internet Accessible Database) is the software used to manage interlibrary loan requests. Use your ILLiad account to submit and track requests, receive electronic requests, renew physical loans, and keep track of your borrowing history and due dates.

Placing an interlibrary loan request

Things to do before placing an interlibrary loan request:

  • Before placing a request for interlibrary loan, make sure it's not in the Stony Brook University Libraries' collections.  Check SEARCH.
  • Provide a complete citation for articles.  Leaving out information may result in a delay in getting the requested material to you. You may wish to include the source of the citation or other relevant notes that will help our staff find the material for you.
  • Note the language of the requested material.  Sometimes the citation is in English but the actual work is in another language.

Once you have confirmed that the item is not in our collection, log in to ILLiad and place your request.

Request limits

Limits on Interlibrary Loan or Document Delivery requests

The number of active interlibrary loan requests will depend on patron status.  ILL requests in excess of the stated limit will not be filled until borrowed material is returned.  Please plan accordingly.

Please speak to Interlibrary Loan department staff if you require special consideration regarding these limits.

  • Faculty: 100
  • Graduate students: 50
  • Undergraduate students and staff: 20

Patrons are asked to submit no more than 10 ILL requests a day.

Turnaround time

How long does it take to get material through Interlibrary Loan?

Many requests that can be delivered electronically are usually available within 24-48 hours.

Print resources and physical media can take longer and are, on average, available within 8-10 business days.
